My mom doesn’t like dessert. Growing up, my mom only has made 3 kind of desserts (mango pudding, watermelon popsicle, and bird’s nest soup). My favorite has to be the mango pudding! If you have been to a Chinese dim sum restaurant, you may have seen mango pudding in carts. It is one of the popular desserts in Hong Kong. But of course, the restaurant ones only have a little bit of mangoes. My mom’s version is filled with mangoes. It is just delightful!
If you are not sure what the texture of this pudding is, think panna cotta or creamy jello. This is definitely not banana pudding or bread pudding kind of pudding. In this recipe, I used the mango flavor jelly powder. I got this from Hong Kong. I have no idea where I can find the same in the US. It looks like JELL-O have this product at some point, but I don’t think they can be found in stores now. I found them at amazon.com. I haven’t tried them yet, but I will try them one day. They should taste very similar to the one from Hong Kong.
“Serradura” means “sawdust” in Portuguese. Sawdust pudding may sound a bit unappetizing, but the sawdust actually refers to the biscuit crumbs. The biscuits were crushed super fine, which look like sawdust. No matter how weird it may look, I am sure that you will get addicted to this dessert after you have tried it. I tried this many years ago in Macau in a Portuguese restaurant. It was in a cake slice form. It was creamy and cold, like a hard ice-cream. The sweetness was perfect. It was unforgettable. I have to go and get a slice when I go to Macau every time. Macau maybe too far to go now, but this recipe has just saved my craving!
After I have tried a delicious slice of banana cream pie in a burger place, I can’t stop thinking about banana dessert. I guess banana pudding is close enough to banana cream pie. This recipe is very good. The great part is the stabilized whipped cream! Since this recipe is for 6 – 8 servings, Bryan and I couldn’t find this in a day. This whipped cream can stay in the fridge for a few days without turning into water. With the sweet banana, creamy pudding, and soft wafers, this is a truly comforting dessert!
